Volunteers wanted... PDF Print E-mail

Track 2000 is a community based charity that works to alleviate poverty in the Cardiff and Vale areas. We operate three community shops that provide furniture and electrical appliances at affordable prices. Track 2000 relies heavily on the kind and dedicated volunteers who run our shops, drive our vehicles and generally help to assist us with the aim and objectives of the charity.
If you would be interested in finding out about how you could help Track 2000 and its recipients, then please send an email to the following address, stating any areas of interest/expertise you have and how you would like to work alongside our charity...
We look forward to hearing from you:

TRACK 2000 runs fleet of vehicles on Biodiesel... PDF Print E-mail

Track 2000 is pleased to announce that its fleet of vehicles are running on the environmentally friendly BIODIESEL!

In keeping with our efforts to work ecologically, Track 2000 is using this form of fuel to operate the six vehicles that are used to collect and deliver furniture in Cardiff and the Vale.

What is Biofuel?

Generally speaking, Biodiesel is an alternative or additive to standard diesel fuel that is made from biological ingredients instead of petroleum (or crude oil). Biodiesel is usually made from Plant oils or animal fat through a series of chemical reactions. It is both non-toxic and renewable. It is a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. Although Biodiesel contains no petroleum, it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, non-toxic and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

Is Biofuel safe?

YES! Biofuel is safe and can be used in diesel engines with little or no modification needed. The fuel is made from biological ingredients instead of fossil fuels. These starting ingredients can range from corn to soybeans to animal fat, depending on the type of fuel being made and the production method. Because biodiesel essentially comes from plants and animals, the sources can be replenished through farming and recycling.

How does this help the environment?

Pure biodiesel does not contain Sulfur and therefore reduces sulfur dioxide exhaust from diesel engines to virtually zero. As we rely heavily on transport to complete daily duties, this can significantly reduce your Carbon Footprint...

What is a Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is a measure of the effect human activities have on the climate in terms of the total amount of greenhouse gasses produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. Many activities generate carbon emissions, which contribute to accelerating global warming and climate change. It is important to be aware of your own carbon footprint in order to understand how you can reduce the impact of your lifestyle on the environment and help the UK reach the target of reducing carbon emissions by 20% by 2010

Transport is one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions so using Biodiesel is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. The carbon dioxide produced during the combustion of biodiesel was absorbed by the plants during growth, so using biodiesel in place of fossil fuel emits less CO2 and reduces the greenhouse effect. A typical driver (10,000 miles per year) in a car with average fuel consumption is able to save 3,500kg of CO2 emissions per year when running on biodiesel..

Environmental benefits of using Biodiesel...

  • 1 litre of mineral diesel emits 2.68kg of CO2 - biodiesel made from used vegetable oil saves 90% of these emissions.
  • Biodiesel is largely carbon neutal so does not contribute to an increase in greenhouse gasses which cause global warming.
  • Biodiesel is less polluting - particulates (smoke) are reduced by up to 85%, hydrocarbon emissions are reduced by up to 95%, poly-aromatic hydrocarbons by up to 40% and there are no sulphur oxides/dioxides which often cause lung conditions such as asthma .
  • Biodiesel is safe to use and store as it is non-toxic, fully biodegradable and has a flash point almost three times higher than mineral diesel!
  • Made from recycled vegetable oil - this cuts down pollutions and waste.
  • Biodesel is produceable locally, retaining wealth in the local economy
